EMMA KELLY

A dynamic drama practitioner with significant experience in theatre, education and dramatic writing.

Having taught performing arts alongside developing and producing site-specific theatre, I now create work for stage and screen as a dramatist. I combine my performance art background with my writing skills to tell thought-provoking stories. My work is comic, dark and edgy. I have a keen interest in science fiction, phycological drama, social theatre and magical realism.

WRITING PROJECTS 2019-2021

As the resident writer of Close Encounters Theatre Company in Zurich, I have developed several major projects. The most recent theatre production was Love, Loss and Empty Places, a verbatim piece dramatizing actors’ personal stories. It was performed live in December 2020 in Zurich.

Close Encounters first commissioned me in May 2020 to write eight scenes for online production. I titled these Extraordinary Tales of the Locked Down World. The stories were thematically linked to the pandemic and explored love, isolation, mental health, the not too distant future. They were performed virtually in June 2020 to an international audience with great success. Close Encounters then commissioned me to write Extraordinary Tales Part Two, which was live-streamed in March 2020. Creating work in this hybrid of theatre and film has been exciting for me as an artist.

In development with Close Encounters are the following: Seven Sins and The Darker Side of Grimm, Two plays to be performed in May 2021, an adaptation of A Christmas Carol for production in winter 2021 and The Three, a short science fiction film for children, filming commences in March 2022.

Selected as one of 13 student playwrights to be part of ACT ii, I wrote a short play, A Small Trifle which explores sexual identity. This play was developed and performed virtually as part of the ACT ii festival 2020. It was nominated by ACT ii for the Off Westend OnComm awards 2020. It also features on the Scenesaver website.

I was commissioned to write a poem, The Giant of Dover for Fort Burgoyne, a placemaking project for a Dover regeneration concept in November 2019.

PREVIOUS RELEVANT EXPERIENCE

Drama Teacher Brighton College Prep 2003-2019

I coached students in acting, improvisation, mime, devised theatre, film making, poetry and public speaking. Establishing a private drama department, I developed a drama syllabus and set the school up as an examination centre for LAMDA. I held the position of Head of Drama at the Prep School for eight years. One of the aspects of this role included the direction of two big-budget musicals a year.

Drama Specialist 2004-2006

After volunteering in a community play setting, I was inspired to start a drama and art workshop company called Jamboree Arts. In collaboration with other artists, the company created bespoke drama and art workshops for councils, local schools and festivals.

Performance Artist 2000-2007

Following my degree, I wrote, directed and performed in performance installations at music festivals. I was also involved with other artists, creating site-specific and immersive theatre.

Voluntary Work 2018-2020

In 2020 as a workshop facilitator, I volunteered with Rethink Mental Illness to design workshops to address the student community’s mental health issues.

In 2018 I co-founded the first drama society at the University of Arts London taking the role of treasurer. I also led performance workshops for members.

Community Outreach 2020

With MAKE Story Garden, a public space for creative collaboration with and by the community, in St Pancreas, I was part of a training program to facilitate participatory projects. I was particularly interested in how outreach can encourage communities to access resources to tackle loneliness.
